Introduction of the Barred Numerals (Scottish Post Towns)



As shown in the introduction to this section, in June 1844, numbers 1 to 342 were allocated and the earliest recorded usage of a Scottish Barred Numeral is 19 June 1844 in Glasgow.

cancelled with a black maltese cross.



[DH] from Glasgow to Paisley dated 20 June 1844,
cancelled with black Scottish 159 numeral of Glasgow.

This is the second day of use of the numeral cancellation in Glasgow.
One cover dated 19 June and a second dated 20 June are known.
