As shown in the introduction to this section, in May 1844, numbers 1 to 20 were allocated with each number being used.

In March 1847, a new set of obliterators was issued with the same overall design and the number range extended to 22; by December 1853, the numbers had been extended to 44.

The earliest recorded usages of a London Inland Barred Numeral is 17 May 1844 and there are two covers recorded with this date.
